Extremely embarrassed and frustrated with having Irritable Bowel Syndrome :(?

Question by youknowyouloveme<3: Extremely embarrassed and frustrated with having Irritable Bowel Syndrome :( ?
Since I was about 8 years old I remember getting this horrible stomach aches where I would just cry for hours hoping I’d be able to go to the bathroom. Every single time I went it ended up being diarrhea. I know both my Mom & Grandma both had their gallbladders removed and faced the same problems – yet I still have mine. I am 19 now and having something like IBS is extremely frustrating.

I can never eat ANYTHING before leaving my house to go out with people. If I do that, then I begin to get those weird stomach cramps and I know I’m going to have to run to a nearby bathroom. Once that happens I have to cancel my plans because I am in fear I’ll be with a crowd nowhere near a bathroom. Especially due to me being a somewhat nervous person – my embarrassment basically makes me constipated. So I’m standing with this horrible stomach ache basically ready to explode and then my nervousness makes me unable to get rid of it!!!

It gets to the point, I just don’t even go out to eat with friends, or god forbid even going out a date!! It’s horrible trying to explain to a guy without mentioning its IBS & why you don’t want to eat, even though you are staring at his pizza like a ravenous animal. Luckily I am extremely skinny – but people believe its natural and have no idea how horrible my stomach really is.

No matter what I do – every food I eat makes me go. Most people will eat a slice of pizza and a soda followed by an ice cream. If I ever tried to do that I would literally die to a bathroom. And that’s just another problem – I can’t use any other bathroom besides the one in my own house! Unless I know its hopeless – sometimes I get lucky and I just go .. I just get so embarrassed to think of “blowing up” a public/boyfriends bathroom :(

What can I do to make these stomach aches less frequent? Because it takes such a toll on my life and nobody really understands :( I don’t want to starve myself just so I can leave to socialize.

It might be worthwhile seeing a gastroenterologist to see if there is some treatable condition causing this problem. There are a variety of medications that can be tried, and maybe you could get trial prescriptions for few medications to see if any of them work. An antidepressant such as Wellbutrin might even be worth trying – a major effect of the medication is decreased intestinal motility, and this drug tends to cause few side effects in most people.

Q&A: I think I have a problem?

Question by Katie: I think I have a problem?
I think I have a problem with compulsive eating. Over the past few days, I’ve been researching it, because this problems been with me for a few years now. I exercise everyday, running track and horseback riding. I’m not overweight yet, (I’m 16, 5’1″, 116lbs) but I’m extremely afraid that if I keep up with this behavior I will be soon. During the school day I can control myself since our meals are at set times. But, when I’m home, I just feel like eating and eating until I get so full. Then I have to consciously distract myself from eating. For example, this is what my diet today has been:
Breakfast- grapefruit, banana, yogurt
Lunch- peanut butter on rice cake, 2 egg whites and piece of cheese
Snacks- almost a whole bag of just born jelly beans, a couple pieces of chocolate, an apple, a handful or two of tortilla chips and dip

I know, it doesn’t look awful, but that’s alot of food for a small person. I’m full now. I don’t need to eat that much. I can usually go through the morning without any major problems, but after lunch I feel out of control. I always say to myself, “oh, I’ll start my diet tomorrow” and continue eating, trying to push aside the guilt. But then I remember that’s what I said yesterday or whatever. If I work really hard, I can have 2 good days where I eat like a normal person, but the third day, it’s all over. I keep track of what I eat and try to plan it out every day so I can try to have some control. I’ve been attempting to slim down so that I’m faster for track but it’s not happening. I also feel like I’d look better if I were thinner. I do have very low self esteem, but I try to cover it up as best I can. People tell me I’m pretty, “tiny”, and boys tell me I’m hot (not to brag, just telling the truth) because I’m “curvy and skinny” apparently. I hate my body though. I try to like it, but I can’t. My best friend’s pretty small so she makes me look curvy I guess. I feel like she can wear anything, but I can’t wear tight shirts because they’ll show my stomach fat when I sit down.

Does it sound like I have a problem? Does everyone go through these problems? I’m afraid to tell my Mom about my over-eating because she’ll just tell me it’s not that bad.
I’m just scared of what it’ll turn into in the future. This problem is really getting out of hand. I’m always thinking about food when I’m at home. I should also mention that yesterday I was tested positive for celiac disease and I’m probably lactose intolerant too. Will this behavior get better as I eat gluten free foods? Should I talk to a doctor about this? Again, I’d prefer not to tell my Mom about it. I have to talk to a dietitian soon about my diet with celiac disease so maybe I could mention my problem then?

Or if I don’t want to talk to a doctor, is the only way to get rid of this habit to strictly control what I eat? Will it go away if I plan out all my meals and stick to it?

Answer by krispy
That actually works out pretty well for you that you have celiac disease because it’s mostly carbs like pasta, bread, rice that make people fat. I don’t think it sounds like you are fat at all and I think that the world and media portray a normal weight to be too specific. The foods that you’re eating are not bad at all and I’m positive that even if you continued to eat like that, you will not be gaining much weight. Just try to avoid soft drinks and ice cream as those two things can really add on the sugar and calories. If you have to have those, just limit yourself to moderate amounts. Also, it’s good that you eat breakfast because that’s the most important meal. If you eat a good full breakfast, you’ll feel less hungry throughout the day. To stay leaner, it’s always best to eat less carbs (pasta, bread, rice, potatoes), and focus more on protein (meat, eggs, fish), fruits and veggies, and lots of water. For carbs, try to go with brown stuff instead of white stuff.. like whole wheat pasta, bread, brown rice, etc or whatever you’ll have to eat that’s gluten-free.

Try yoga as well. It’s great in tightening up all the muscles of the body.

Could I have Lymphoma? If not, what could be causing a painful swollen lymph node in my groin?

Question by Jetset: Could I have Lymphoma? If not, what could be causing a painful swollen lymph node in my groin?
Yesterday I woke up and noticed that I had a PAINFUL swollen lymph node on the left side of my groin (where the inside of my left thigh meets my scrotum). I went to the Dr. yesterday afternoon. He did a blood test and called me today to say that my blood counts are normal. He also did a strept test (pretty unrelated b/c my wife/son have had strept this month) and that was normal.

* My grandfather had lymphoma when he was around 50 years old. He said the only symptom he had was a swollen but PAINLESS lymph node in the same area.
* I am 28 years old
* 3 months ago I had serious abdominal surgery (removed part of my colon). After the surgery I had pain in my left testicle/groin area. I mentioned that to the surgeon and he said it was normal. The pain continued for a couple of months but over the past 3 weeks or so I feel like I stopped noticing the pain… until yesterday when I noticed the swollen lymph node.
* The surgeon diagnosed me with severe Irritable Bowel Syndrome
* I have not had fevers, weight loss, itchy skin, etc. (other symptoms of Lymphoma) and I only have the one swollen lymph node.

Based on this, what do you think could be the cause of the swelling/pain in my lymph node? Could it be due to my IBS or lingering effects from intestinal surgery 3 months ago? I hope it’s not Lymphoma! I’m trying to keep my head up but it’s hard not to worry. I know it’s possible that it is Lymphoma, but since only have one swollen node and no other symptoms and a normal blood test, would you worry if you were me?

Best answer:

Answer by Incendiary
I wouldn’t be overly concerned, personally. Generally cancerous nodes/masses are not painful, and considering you’ve just noticed the swelling it is probably from something relatively harmless. There’s been no evidence showing lymphoma to be hereditary, by the way.

Definitely keep an eye on it, if it doesn’t go down in a week or two see your doctor again. If it’s something you just can’t get past, talk to your doctor about possibly having a biopsy done.

What are the main differences between gastritis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Question by ಌMemsterಌ: What are the main differences between gastritis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
Also, which one is made worse by certain foods?

I try to eat gentle foods, but my stomach (right in the middle, over my navel area) hurts every day of my life. It has gradually gotten worse over the last 6 months. The Dr. tried me on Nexium which only helped minimally.

Any help/answer is appreciated. ;)

Gastritis is a disorder of the lining of the stomach, whereas IBS is a disorder of your colon. Symptoms of gastritis include: nausea, vomiting, feeling of fullness, pernicious anemia. Symptoms of IBS include: abdominal discomfort, constipation, diarrhea.
Diet changes are common in IBS treatment. I’ve heard that fats have been found to start irritation in IBS, but I think a lot of your diet changes are going to be determined on your own personal recall of what triggers your episodes.
